What is a B Corp?
The B Corp website states; “Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies verified by B Lab to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.” (https://bcorporation.uk/b-corp-certification/what-is-a-b-corp/).
All decisions a business makes needs to take into account their impact, whether this is socially or environmentally. And it doesn’t just stop there, this is something businesses need to keep working on, every B Corp has to recertify every 3 years and improve their score.
In other words it’s more than just a logo that appears in our website footer – it’s a genuine commitment to upholding rigorous standards in social and environmental performance, while maintaining transparency and accountability throughout our operations.
Our B Corp journey
Flashback to the beginning of 2023 all of us here at Curious took the first step of looking at ourselves. Having been in operation for over 22 years, we’ve always been a company that’s paid attention to our surroundings, but as the world around us continues to change rapidly, it felt right to consider what more we could do ourselves. This led us to the decision to work towards achieving our B Corp status, and the positive changes we could make in the way we operate and what we can contribute.
How can we build on what we’ve got in place? What are the things we’re not thinking about? What can we learn from others? How can we push to do more?
The B Corp certification process begins with answering 200+ questions across the five operational categories: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers. Based on these responses, you’ll receive a score — with a minimum of 80 points required for certification eligibility (And a lot of the time businesses don’t even make it to 80 points the first time around!).
Of course B Corp doesn’t simply take your word for these answers; you must provide supporting evidence for each of your claims throughout the assessment.
What does this mean for Curious?
Yes, we have certified (which in itself is a tremendous achievement) but this doesn’t mean we stop there. There is still so much for us to learn. Every single decision we make as a business now has an extra layer for us to look at, ensuring all choices align with our core values and principles.
But as part of becoming a B Corp we have a whole growing community of other B Corporations to help us.
