A place that belongs to everyone
East London Student Union (ELSU) wanted a new café on their Stratford campus. After the success of Nook at their Docklands site, this new brand needed to feel just as warm and human – a place that serves students, not just food and coffee. We aimed for something simple, inviting, and a little provocative.
Student life moves fast: lectures, part-time jobs, deadlines. Moments of stillness are rare. The challenge was to create a space that celebrates slowing down without promoting laziness. Our brand invites students to pause, connect, and recharge.
Through our naming process, we found a concept that gives permission to pause. Idle is honest – it flips productivity on its head, making space for what matters: a chat, a coffee, a laugh, a breather. The identity reflects the effortless, the organic, and the unplanned, communicating that it’s okay to slow down here.
Since launch, Idle has become more than a café – it’s a collective comfort zone. A space where students can recharge, meet, and feel at home. It’s a brand that honours the pace of student life while encouraging connection, reflection, and balance.
